Leigh is a past-president and founding member of Yoga Australia. He has practiced yoga and meditation since 1968 and was the Founder of the Australian Institute of Yoga Therapy where he trained yoga teachers from 2000 to 2010 and yoga therapists from 2006 to 2013. Leigh is often described as the ‘father of yoga therapy in Australia’ and is sort-after presenter nationally and internationally.
He is an IAYT Certified Yoga Therapist and certification supervisor, Yoga Australia Senior Registered Teacher and Yoga Therapist, Certified iRest Teacher and has graduate qualifications in Health Sciences. Leigh has over 40 years’ experience as a Yoga and meditation teacher. He has served on the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) Standards, Accreditation and Certification Committees and is a member of Yoga Australia’s Advisory Council.
Leigh’s life has been dedicated to the establishment of high credible standards of education and professional practice for the fields of yoga, yoga therapy and meditation.
His teachers have included: Michael Volin, Sri Yogendra, Swami Gitananda, A.G. Mohan and Dr Richard Miller. He is grateful for the many students who over the years have also been his teachers and is privileged and blessed to have a number of students who have become close colleagues and who are ‘carrying the torch’, ensuring that much of his life’s work is continued into the future with their added wisdom and ‘flavours’.
Leigh is passionate about sharing the non-dual teachings that underpin iRest® and is the Associate Director – Australasia for the Integrative Restoration Institute.
In 2013 he was conferred a Presidential Award for “extraordinary service to the field of yoga therapy” at the IAYT symposium in the United States.
As of late 2017, Leigh transitioned into vanaprastha the third stage of life according to the Vedic tradition, in which more time is spent in deep svadhyaya and personal practice and mentoring, while stepping back from many previous professional and family roles.
