Sal is a Yoga therapist, psychotherapist and educator who works with trauma.
With the prevalence of trauma in our society, it is important that Yoga teachers and therapists understand what trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder are and how you can help your affected students.
One of the world’s leading experts on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, tried yoga himself and was hooked. He has pioneered the use of Yoga as a therapy in helping people working through their PTSD.
He found that relaxation and breathing practices helped his PTSD patients calm themselves down when they sensed that a flashback or panic attack was coming.
In this interview, Dr. Van der Kolk, addresses –
• how Yoga can help trauma-sensitive individuals,
• whether meditation is suitable for those with PTSD and
• advice for Yoga teachers working with trauma-sensitive individuals
